According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the prevalence of atopic eczema is increasing and affects 9 to 30% of the U.S. population. Eczema is characterized by itchy, cracking, sometimes oozing patches of dry skin, which occurs predominately on the hands, feet, face, and knees, but can occur anywhere. Eczema is particularly common in young children and infants, many of whom outgrow the condition by adulthood. Others still suffer well into their adult years. People with a family history of eczema, allergies, hay fever, and asthma tend to be more prone to the condition. Traditional dermatological treatments often include various forms of topical ointments and corticosteroids creams, as well as antihistamines to calm down the allergic response.
As of this writing, there is no single known cause of eczema. Current treatments are geared toward addressing the symptoms and not looking under the surface to understand and address the reason the body is presenting with eczema in the first place. I myself was a case in point. I had eczema all throughout my childhood. It started around my mouth as an infant when I put toys in my mouth. I still remember running through the house, after my Mother applied, yet another cream to my face, prescribed by the dermatologist. It burned so bad, I couldn’t sit still. As I grew up it progressed from my forearms to my hands, and at times, around my face. It would settle down in the summer and would get worse in the dry of winter. It followed me throughout adulthood, as I would frequently be seen with band-aids on my fingers. Until that is, I had my first experience with a Naturopath.
The Naturopath determined that I had a high concentration of yeast, fungus, Candida, and parasites resident in my digestive tract. My skin was the vehicle for which my body would try to eliminate. I had so many antibiotics as a child that had killed off my protective good bacteria, allowing my intestinal track to proliferate into a cesspool of invading microbes. After a ninety-day program of homeopathic and herbal remedies to eliminate the microbes, restore the good flora in my gut, and repair the damaged tissue, all my eczema disappeared. This was truly the best gift I could have had for my fortieth birthday.
Another case involved a woman in her fifties. She presented with persistent eczema on her hands and legs. For years, she would not wear shorts, due to the embarrassing dry patches. Her work involved the use of her hands in a therapeutic touch modality, which made it difficult to use her cracked and blistered hands. She also complained of a multitude of allergies, including foods such as dairy and grains. After six months of clearing resident bacteria such as Giardia Lamblia, Nanobacterium, and Mycoplasma, pathogens such as Candida, Fungus, and Parasites, and various viruses and environmental toxins, her body quickly rebounded. Within six weeks of the initial treatment, her legs and hands were 95% clear. She also went through the NAET allergy elimination program, as her body presented with a multitude of allergies. She was able to consume dairy and grains, where she previously could not without spurring eczema related reaction. And she enjoyed a summer, for the first time in many years, of wearing her Capri pants!
Most people who present with skin-related conditions respond by addressing one or more of the following: correcting compromised digestion, clearing resident pathogens, (bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungus, Candida), removing toxins, and treating resident allergies. This protocol addresses the underlying imbalances, restores balance, and eliminates the body’s need to use the skin as a vehicle for elimination. This same approach will work for other skin conditions such as psoriasis, Rosacea, and hives. There is no longer a need to suffer needlessly with chronic skin disorders.
